Abstract: |
Phase 1 of the Domestic Range Undercroft conversion programme involved archaeological recording in three areas, of which this area was one. In the former Flat, in the northeast block of the range (largely of the 1670s, but remodelled between 1857 and 1862), plaster was removed from a number of internal walls where new openings were planned so that the underlying structure could be examined and recorded and damage to important buried architectural features avoided. The plaster stripping revealed a probably original arch of\nthe 1670s (K52; blocked by 1764) between the 'north' and 'west' rooms of the block, and the discovery of a blocked window (K51) showed that the 'east' room was an addition of the late 17th century. The window is the only one of this period to survive in the building, the others having been altered in the mid-18th century; being a basement window, however, it was not as elaborate as those on the first and second floors. The work in the Flat also revealed that the 1857-62 remodelling involved more extensive rebuilding than was previously thought.[AIP] |
