Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during geotechnical evaluation works, vegetation management and shaft safety works on Trelyon Downs, safety works to mine workings and building consolidation in Steeple Woods and to its north and vegetation management, path upgrading and other amenity works in Steeple Woods and on Trelyon Downs. The removal of obscuring scrub on Trelyon Downs allowed an earlier archaeological assessment fieldwork map to be corrected and updated, and, as a result, some reinterpretation of site features was possible, allowing the identification of a documented but previously unlocated shaft and a section of gunnising and a backfilled shaft near Steeple Woods. This reinterpretation also allowed the site of the stamps engine house and associated structures to be identified in the field. Recording work on the ruinous mine building in Steeple Woods was also carried out. [Au(adp)] |
