Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken on behalf of Birmingham City Council, who intended to carry out improvement works to the site. The results of the document and map study showed that a medieval moated manor house stood on the site of the Moat House, formally Hawkesley Farm. Documentary and archaeological evidence existed from at least the 13th century onwards with the manor of Hawkesley established sometime in the late 13th century. During the Civil War the house was besieged and burnt down by Prince Rupert in 1645. A limited excavation was carried out in 1957 ahead of the construction of the present tower block, this yielded valuable information about the site. The study concluded that there was a potential for further deposits to exist within the site, which would add to an existing body of information. [Au(abr)]
