Abstract:
A desk-based assessment supported by preliminary field survey of land proposed for reclamation works on a site of the former West Wheal Mine, worked between the 1840's and 1890's, was undertaken. It was found that most of the site had been cleared by the time of the 1908 Ordnance Survey map, with further disruption caused by salvaging minerals from the earlier mine dumps, landscaping works and the construction of the Cambourne bypass. Archaeologically significant remains however had survived in a number of the shaft throats, in some cases the shafts remaining open. [AIP]
