Abstract:
Several areas in the grounds of Parham House were observed and recorded during a watching brief over a storm drainage project. The park area west of the Pleasure Grounds was shown to be relatively undisturbed; traces of prehistoric activity were found. It and the area east of the house complex were deemed to have some archaeological potential. The Pleasure Grounds themselves had been landscaped and so the archaeological potential was deemed to be low. The present walled garden was last remodelled in 1982. Other than a garden feature 'per se', its archaeological potential within the original enclosure was unknown. The archaeological potential of the majority of the Fountain Court was thought to be high, apart from disturbed areas in the north-east and south-east corners. The Mulberry Court preserved traces of the post-medieval development of the courtyard and was thus deemed of high archaeological potential, as was Garage Court. The area to the south of Parham House had high archaeological potential, particularly for the medieval and early post-medieval periods. [Au]
