Abstract: |
A field evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed hotel extension. Trench 2 contained a robbed wall and was built in association with a worn surface consisting of pitched stones butting the west side and may have represented a former yard contemporary with the use of the site as a coaching inn during the 18th/19th century. Trench 3 contained a large pit containing a rubble fill with early post-medieval domestic refuse and was sealed later garden soils. In Trench 4 natural geology was similarly overlain by layers of later post-medieval refuse and garden soils. A few sherds of late medieval roof tile and pottery provided the earliest evidence of human activity on the site. [Au(adp)] |
