Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of a trial pit adjacent to the north terrace wall of Trafalgar Square. The earliest deposits encountered were the natural sand and gravels which were reached at 2.50m below ground surface at 9.81m OD. Truncating the natural was an 18th century brick culvert which crossed the trial pit in a north-south direction. This culvert was likely to have been associated with a series of buildings shown close to the study area on the 18th century maps. A series of 19th century demolition deposits overlay the culvert which were likely to have represented the demolition material of a number of 18th century buildings which stood within the vicinity of the watching brief prior to the construction of Trafalgar Square in 1830.
