Abstract: |
<summary>A management plan survey of the St Michael's Mount estate recorded a diverse range of sites, including: elements of later prehistoric fortification on the lower north-eastern slopes; the footings of buildings to the west of the main medieval castle complex, lying within the lines of a previously unrecognised curtain wall; a low, later medieval rampart or breastwork running around the base of the island; and earthworks to the rear of the village, probably of medieval, but conceivably of prehistoric date. The complex Royalist Civil War defences were also disentangled from the gardens, and the defended gateway on the northern slopes was attributed to this period. Early modern pilchard cellars were noted in the basements of the 19th century buildings in the village. {italon}Sec(abr)(28a){italoff} |
