Abstract:
An assessment of Old Ranges, Shoeburyness was undertaken in order to advise a Joint Working Group in advance of the planning, sale and re-development of the site. Desk-based study revealed that it had been occupied and utilised since early prehistory, producing Palaeolithic worked flint, Bronze Age tools and an Iron Age burial and coins. However, permanent settlement had not taken place until AD 894, when an encampment had been established on the promontory by a vanquished Scandinavian army. With the defeat of Canute and the ascendancy of the Normans, the site had returned to its rural state, forming part of the North Shoebury manorial estate and supporting a small population. The rural character of the site had been maintained until its establishment as an experimental range station for the Royal Artillery in 1849. A historic building survey produced a comprehensive photographic and written record of all the structures and earthworks, upstanding and demolished, which had occupied the site since 1849. The survey revealed that the upstanding buildings had survived in reasonably good condition, and that they had retained much of their original character. It was suggested that the site could be divided into four main categories of archaeological potential - none, uncertain, certain and demonstrated. Of demonstrated potential was the Danish encampment, of certain potential was the southern shoreline where prehistoric artefacts had been recovered, of uncertain significance were Gunners Park and an area of waste ground to the east where rifle ranges had been located, and of no potential were those areas previously disturbed by groundworks.
