Abstract:
The evaluation, on the proposed route of a gas pipeline, recorded archaeological evidence in Area F that attested to probable Roman settlement in the vicinity. This included possible structures and domestic settlement enclosures and, further west, the site of industrial activity in the form of iron smelting. Towards the east of the area structural evidence on the form of post holes sealed by a possible demolition layer were noted, including a significant quantity of pottery and CBM. Banked ditches and a number of pits were also indicative of settlement activity. A mettle surface and quantities of iron slag were encountered. The close proximity of Roman Akeman Street to the south was thought to have facilitated industrial activity at the site. [Au(adp)]
