Abstract: |
Documentary research indicated that medieval harbour features and structures were likely to lie at considerable depths beneath the present surface. The same would be true of later medieval features such as the position of a gibbet marked on Millerd's 17th century map and the 'Building Yards' on the early 18th century map. There was the potential for later structures to have survived closer to the surface, such as the first warehouses on the site shown in Rocque's plan and Pocock's painting. It was also possible that evidence for these structures were revealed in the excavation within the building of 1973. There were no surviving features from the 19th century structures, such as the cranes and open shed, evidence on the site, although elements of these could have survived beneath the present cobbled quayside area. The Bush Warehouse itself was one of the most prominent and historic buildings in the Bristol harbour area. [Au(adp)] |
