Abstract: |
An archaeological desk based assessment was undertaken as part of a planning condition required in advance of the proposed extension of the existing Business Park on land covering an overall area of 13.94ha. The assessment found that the site lay in an area characterised throughout much of recorded history as part of the fens surrounding the historic Isle of Ely, though since the 19th century it had been drained and comprised oxidised peat and former peat soils. No archaeological finds were recorded from the assessment area, though occasional finds of Roman and prehistoric date had been recovered from higher clay soils to the west. Considering the relative topographical and environmental situation, it was considered unlikely that evidence of permanent activity for any period extended into the assessment area and that the archaeological potential was low.
