Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken within the grounds of Castle Ashby House, in advance of the proposed re-siting of the Ford Pavilion. Two trenches excavated in the northern part of the 19th century walled kitchen garden revealed a series of strata generated by horticultural processes, overlying limestone brash. The evaluation identified two areas of different land-use lying either side of a former central trackway or path, with spade-dug cultivation to the west and an homogenous tilth to the east. A single pit was also revealed in the eastern area. Apart from residual sherds of Saxon and medieval pottery, no activity earlier than the 19th and 20th centuries was identified. [AIP] |
