Abstract: |
Desk-top study assessed the impact of two possible routes for the new road in the Sturry area. This revealed extensive archaeological remains, mostly recovered as a consequence of gravel extraction, largely between the 1920s and 1940s. This included quantities of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic flints, and evidence of a rich prehistoric landscape. Significant remains from the Iron Age through to the close of the medieval period were noted including Iron Age and Roman settlements, a Roman port and quayside; 1st/2nd century and 6th century cremation cemeteries and a medieval church, settlement and manor.
