Abstract: |
A single trench was excavated across a putative prehistoric round barrow, known from cartographic sources, to establish whether the monument still existed and if so to what extent and depth it survived. The monument, protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM 668), was found to survive as a clay mound interpreted as the damaged remains of a barrow. Humic alluvial clay layers, relating to flood-deposits, surrounded the mound, which had been protected to some degree by a considerable depth of modern land-fill across the site. Evidence of some modern disturbance to the mound was noted however at its south-eastern end. The exposed area of the mound was recorded but no further investigative sampling was undertaken. [Au] |
