Abstract: |
Archaeological investigations at the former Couch's Factory site took place in advance of the redevelopment of the site. The site was located within the Historic Settlement designation of St. Ives, in an area where there was potential for buried medieval deposits and the remains of a mid-19th century fish cellar. Trenches dug across the site to evaluate the nature and extent of any buried archaeological remains revealed mainly blown sand and recently made-up ground, though a small number of prehistoric flint artefacts were retrieved and there were two timber-lined tanks which may have originally been associated with the fish cellar. Above ground, the factory buildings were found to incorporate most of the original walls of the fish cellar. [Au(abr)] |
