Abstract: |
The marine and land based archaeological assessments were carried out in advance of a proposed gas storage facility which would have involved development on part of an estuary and part of the Irish Sea. The land based assessment revealed that vast deposits of rock salt had been exploited from the late 19th century to 1930 and that due to the wetland nature of the area there could have been good preservation of organic remains, no archaeological remains were identified. The marine based assessment concluded that possible archaeological remains could have lay within the bounds of the Irish Sea. However, neither the extent nor the location of such evidence was known. It was unlikely that the proposed works would disturb any archaeological remains in this area. |
