Abstract: |
The single archaeologically excavated trench contained part of one large pit containing medieval pottery, and several smaller features. The boundary between two medieval tenements was identified to the north. Several pits also containing Laverstock pottery were observed to the south of the trenched area; these were dated to the post-medieval period. All pits contained quantities of animal bone. A change of use and status was identified from purely residential and fairly high status in the 13th/14th centuries to residential/industrial use and artisan status by the 18th century. Several layers and features of post-medieval date were recorded. Most of the site had been disturbed by a 19th century laundry and swimming baths, and later cellaring associated with a furniture store. [Au] |
