Abstract: |
A survey and excavation of a dew pond at Claypits Field, Attermire, Langcliffe was undertaken for research purposes, and due to the desire of the farmer to see the pond be reinstated to provide water for livestock and to replace a water bowser. The research aims were; to ascertain whether the feature was actually a dew pond or ponding of a, now dry, spring; to provide dating evidence for the feature and to provide an understanding of the construction techniques involved, and possible phases of use and repair. The feature was deemed to be a dew pond, of a simple and typical construction. There was however, no direct dating evidence, nor was there any indirect dating evidence from closely associated features. If the dew pond was to be reinstated it was recommended that, if possible, the associated turf and limestone bank (south-west of the pond) be examined at that time. [Au(adp)] |
