Abstract:
Evaluations were undertaken for three connected areas of land which together could form a site for the relocation of the Stonehenge visitor centre and associated facilities. At Countess Road evidence of Saxon and medieval activity was found in the south and south-eastern sector of the site, two areas of ill-defined prehistoric settlement represented by a low density flint scatters, and an area of recent gravel extraction to the north of former military railway was located running through the site. South of the A303 at King Barrow Ridge a linear ditch coincided with a medium density flint scatter, with another linear ditch and small square enclosure to the south of the King Barrow Ridge Barrow Cemetery. A Neolithic pit was also revealed. The corridor linking King Barrow Ridge with Countess Road was found to contain a number of anomalies towards the western area, including some linear features, part of the encircling ditch of a round barrow and the parallel earthworks of the Stonehenge Avenue.
