Abstract:
The site of Throckley Middle School, which was proposed for redevelopment, lay within a landscape which the desk-based study identified as having been utilised since the Roman period. The line of the Roman frontier - Hadrian's Wall - passed along the south side of, and partly impinged upon, the study area. The Wall and associated defensive features were a SAM and World Heritage Site. The site may have been used as a military encampment before the battle of Newburn in 1640, and the assessment also demonstrated that 18th century (and possibly earlier) collieries and associated waggonways existed within the study area. Industrial features of this date were also recognised as an important element of the archaeological resource. The study area contained hedgerows dating from enclosure in the second half of the 18th century which, with the core stone school buildings, had local importance and character. It was recommended that in advance of any redevelopment a programme of archaeological mitigation should be implemented, involving evaluation trenching in the scheduled area to prove or disprove the survival of Hadrian's Wall features or deposits, geophysical survey where undisturbed waggonway and colliery features potentially survived, and recording of standing structures. Subsequent ground disturbing works should be monitored by means of an archaeological watching brief. [Au(abr)]
