Abstract: |
Limited excavations within the surviving late medieval monastic building, possibly the stables of a guesthouse complex later re-used as a stables block in the 17th century, recorded details of the construction of the medieval building and of its later development. Two trenches revealed the remains of an unsuspected internal cross-wall, possibly part of the original building. Groundworks for services around the main house to the north revealed evidence for an early stone wall and associated mortar surface, and for a post-medieval garden feature encircling the house.
