Abstract: |
This programme of archaeological works was carried out after a previous assessment identified a number of features in the area of a proposed pit extension and new road. A building survey at Greensplat Methodist Chapel recorded five main structural phases. A survey and building recording exercise at Carrancarrow Settlement was followed by the opening of trenches that revealed at least two phases in the construction of a small hedged enclosure adjoining the farmhouse. A wall was revealed running to the north east, and the farmhouse showed evidence of levelling and two pits containing dark burnt fills and post-medieval pottery. The removal of the floor in another building revealed a blocked up well. No archaeological remains were recorded in the watching brief at the China Clay Works during the construction of the new road.
