Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that the surrounding landscape contained many relict features relating to medieval and post-medieval agriculture. Excavations to the north-east had revealed evidence of pre-Roman Iron Age occupation, where features had included well-preserved timber structures. Late 5th century pottery and part of a Romano-British settlement had been recorded at a second site, and further evidence of Romano-British activity had been found in the area. An aerial photograph of the proposal site, taken in 1946, showed it as partly open fields with ridge and furrow, and indicated the presence of an enclosure immediately to the south. It was noted that the site lay within an area of wetland, with potential for the preservation of archaeological remains. An evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
