Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the draining of a pond and the removal of its infill, prior to its restoration as a water feature in advance of a housing development. A culvert which apparently supplied the inflow to the pond was also examined. These features were believed to have possibly been associated with the fish-ponds of a medieval friary. During the watching brief, no features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed. All deposits within the pond were found to have been of recent date, with the lowest silt containing a well-stratified piece of 19th century pottery. The culvert was found to have dated from a single period, and to have been constructed of modern bricks with a capping of cement-based concrete. It was suggested that, on the balance of probabilities, the pond did represent an original fishpond associated with the medieval friary, but that no material remains dating from its earlier history had survived. A pond was known to have existed in the present location since, at least, a few years after the dissolution of the friary. It was concluded that the culvert was likely to have been constructed in association with the former North Eastern railway, which bounded the site to the east. [Au(adp)]
