Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed development. A total of 50 sites were identified within a 500 km diameter of the site, the vast majority of which belonged to a period of massive industrialisation in the area. The site of the proposed development lay wholly within an area proven by cartographic evidence to have once contained ballast hills and, subsequently the railway infrastructure associated with the Hetton Coal staithes. Further clearance of the site for recording of visible structures was recommended as well as a watching brief, should development go ahead. [Au(adp)] |
