Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of post-pits for barriers in a lorry park, which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance which included the area of the middle Saxon settlement of Hamwic. Previous excavations within the lorry park had revealed evidence of a large lagoon thought to have formed the eastern boundary of Hamwic, as well as an area of middle Saxon pits, wells and structures. Several further sites in the surrounding area had revealed evidence of Saxon occupation. During the watching brief a soil horizon which was probably ploughsoil was found. This contained no dating evidence, but may have been of medieval or post-medieval date. Collation of the information from this site with that from other sites in the vicinity allowed a conjectural edge to be put forward for the salt marsh which had lain to the south of Hamwic. [AIP] |
