Abstract: |
A number of archaeological sites were known in the centre and vicinity of the town and indicated a dispersed and occasional Roman presence in the area, while wider discoveries suggested that the local landscape had been exploited and farmed since Neolithic times. Berkhamsted came to prominence in the late Saxon period, and throughout the Middle Ages was a thriving market borough with royal patronage. The site lay at the western limit of the town, which was marked by the presence of the 13th century leper hospital of St John the Baptist immediately to the west. The hospital had also been associated with the site of the church of St James, a possible late-Saxon foundation and earlier focus for the settlement. Berkhamsted's fortunes had fluctuated considerably in the post-medieval period and many of its historic buildings had survived. The assessment site had probably been occupied intermittently since the late medieval period, and the earliest maps of the town indicated straggling occupation extending in to the area in the 17th century. By the Victorian period the site was permanently occupied by small shops which existed until the late 1950s, when the buildings on the site were cleared and a motor workshop established. [Au(abr)] |
