Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development which lay within 200m of the site of Glastonbury Abbey, a SAM. The existence of 12th century timber buidings had been demonstrated by an excavation in the vicinity, and a large medieval ditch had been recorded at two nearby sites. During the evaluation several post-medieval features were revealed, comprising a stone-lined conduit, a pit containing slate tile and clay pipe fragments, and a culvert which may have represented a continuation of the conduit. Other features included a late medieval or post-medieval pit, a well-built wall which was probably a medieval boundary and a feature of uncertain function which was probaby post-medieval. Artefacts of medieval date were recovered, including pottery, bone and tile. Damage to the surviving archaeology caused by the current usage of the area and by the erection and demolition of recent structures was noted. [AIP]
