Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed line of a water pipeline identified that significant archaeological features could potentially be encountered at four areas along the route. A scatter of fire-cracked flint had been found where the pipeline was to cross a ridge in the vicinity of SU 862 095. The route also crossed the projected line of a Roman road, and passed through what appeared to represent a gap in the Chichester Entrenchments, or 'Devil's Ditch', SAM nos. 85 and 86. A field system to the west of Chalkpit Lane had been identified on aerial photographs, and the planned route crossed the lines of a disused railway and a soil mark. Other sites recorded in the surrounding area included a shallow depression interpreted as a possible flint-working site, several shallow quarries or mines, and a findspot of Palaeolithic tools. It was recommended that topsoil stripping in areas of archaeological potential should be monitored by an archaeologist. [AIP]
