Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of a pipe trench because, although the town of New Romney was of known historical importance, little was known about the extent and nature of the stratigraphy surviving beneath the town. During the course of the works no walls or structural deposits were observed, nor were any ditches or other obvious features identified. Strata observed throughout the whole length of the trench consisted of horizontal deposits, the cause of which was not clear. Many of thm seemed to have been metalling for a road, while others may have been the result of natural processes. A small quantity of dateable materia was recovered from stratified contexts, which were placed to the 12th or 13th centuries AD. [AIP] |
