Abstract: |
The present building on the site is of 19th century date and was probably built as a store. There are reused timbers from earlier trusses in the roof space. The rear of the property (north face) on the east side showed evidence for an earlier stone structure of post-medieval date. Archaeological evidence in the environs of the site demonstrated stratigraphy dating from the 12th century at a depth of 2 metres below the present ground level. There was at least 1 metre of medieval stratigraphy overlying this on an adjacent site. The site did not appear to have been cellared in recent times and therefore survival of archaeological deposits was considered likely to be good. [Au(abr)] |
