Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment identified that although the site did not contain any known archaeological remains, several sites were present in the immediate vicinity. The site was not in a location where well preserved (waterlogged) deposits could be expected. Although a single prehistoric struck flint was found in the south-eastern portion and the site lay within an area that had considerable entries in the SMR, many relating to stray finds of struck flint, pottery and tile. There was a relatively high density of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and some Roman occupation sites in surrounding areas. A recent study of the settlement patterns within the valley had noted that there was a persistent presence of finds of pottery and occupation sites on the side slopes of the Kennet Valley. Apart from ploughing, there was no suggested heavy disturbance or truncation, which would damage archaeological deposits. [Au(adp)] |
