Abstract: |
Fargate was part of the medieval town of Sheffield. The earliest map showed buildings within the proposed area in 1736. Many of the current buildings in Norfolk Row dated to the 1830s-40s. The new frontage to the area of Fargate between Surrey Street and Norfolk Row was built in the late 1890s. Previous excavations in the High Street had indicated that significant medieval or early post-medieval deposits may have survived. Within the proposal area the cellars of Carmel House extended the entire length and width of the building and therefore it was unlikely that archaeological deposits would have survived in that area.
