Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken across the site in preparation for the disposal of the site for development. An earlier evaluation had revealed features indicative of an early to middle Saxon settlement and a number of medieval and post-medieval deposits to the rear of properties fronting the High Street. The main area of excavation was within the eastern half of field 1 and two further areas were opened to the south. Results comprised the identification of a late Neolithic/early Bronze Age round barrow with associated burials and a small Late Iron Age cremation cemetery. Both had been entirely missed by the evaluation trenches. The trenches had, however, accurately predicted the location of the early to middle Saxon settement and part of this was recorded including post-built sunken feature buildings. The only surprise here was the extent of settlement remains which had been judged to lie only to the west, under the area now protected as an open space, However they clearly covered much of the eastern side of the site also. The settlement did not appear to continue to the south into the area closer to the High Street. As with the evaluation, only features of medieval and post-medieval date were recorded here. [Au(adp)]
