| Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within a Grade II Listed barn, thought to be of 15th century date, which featured 13th century buttresses on one wall. The barn stood beside the Scheduled remains of Minster Lovell Hall (SAM 8), and formed part of the manorial farm complex. During the evaluation, a small pit containing a sherd of 13th-15th century pottery was revealed. A levelling layer within the barn's foundation trench contained 6 further sherds of this date and one dating from the 10th-11th century. A second pit and a freestanding drystone wall which pre-dated the present barn wall were also recorded. It was concluded that a barn-sized structure which may have been built prior to the early 15th century had pre-dated the barn, and that late 13th-mid 15th century garden activity had been found. The foundations of the rear wall of the present barn were also likely to date from the late 13th-mid 15th century. [AIP] |
