Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of two areas of land (designated as Sites A and B for the study) on land adjacent to Bond's Mill, was undertaken. The earliest identified settlement at Stonehouse was focussed around a late Saxon manor approximately 200 metres to the eastern boundary of the application area. A small quantity of Romano-British pottery had also been recovered to the south of the study area during a previous pipeline watching brief. Ridge and furrow earthworks, on two different alignments, were observed within areas A and B, and the study area lay close to the 18th century or earlier cloth mill of Bond's Mill. A World War II pillbox was also thought to have lain within the western half of site B although it was absent from a photograph taken in 1944. A faint linear cropmark crossed the south-east corner of site A, whilst a rectangular parchmark was visible on aerial photographs within Site B. [Au(Adp)] |
