Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an access road, which lay close to the centre of the original village of Epsom. Roman Stane Street passed nearby, and evidence of Saxon activity had been recorded in the vicinity. During the evaluation, the remains of wall footings and brick floors of probable 18th century date were revealed, some of which may have related to Cromwell House, a Listed Building demolished in 1976. A ditch which appeared to be contemporary with the building remains contained pottery, bottle glass, animal bone, roof tile, clay pipe and iron-work. Post-medieval drains, a pit or post hole and further post-medieval artefacts were recorded, whilst prehistoric struck flints and a residual sherd of probable late medieval pottery were found. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during any construction work in the vicinity of the recorded features. [AIP]
