Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during conservation works to a church tower. Several phases of building were identified during the work, the tower was a 15th century addition to a much older building. The most ancient part of the church was the 11th century nave on or near the site of an even older, pre-Conquest, church. In common with the rest of the church, the tower had endured massive restoration in the 19th century. The roof had also been replaced. The tower retained a number of early features, in particular a bell-frame probably dated to the 17th century, an associated contemporary bell and an interesting clock-sundial of 1767. [Au(adp)] |
