Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development, at a site which lay within a designated County Site of Archaeological Importance, was undertaken. The site lay adjacent to an Iron Age hillfort which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Roman material had been recovered in the surrounding area, whilst significant quantities of Bronze Age material had been recorded on St George's Hill and in the immediate vicinity. In the mid-17th century, part of the hill was described as a rabbit warren. It was concluded that the site had a good potential for Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age remains, and a moderate potential for Mesolithic and Roman remains. It was recommended that any archaeological deposits at the site should be preserved in situ where possible, but that field evaluation should be undertaken in areas where ground disturbance would be unavoidable.
