Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during emergency repairs to a sewer servicing in the Precinct of Canterbury Cathedral. A stretch of early walling was revealed running parallel to and some metres north of the northern wall of the medieval brewhouse/bakehouse range fronting Green Court. A building range was shown on this site on a map of c. 1640 and a more detailed elevation appeared on one of c.1680. This last appeared to agree with representations on 19th century surveys, one of which identified it as a stable-block. The stables were demolished in the 1920s and replaced with a smaller, brick-built stable, later converted into the Dean's garage and later still into a house. [Au(abr)] |
