Abstract:
Five trial trenches were excavated prior to development on the site, located in the centre of the medieval town. Previous development had unearthed human burials, possibly from part of the former conventual cemetery. The priory, founded in the 11th century, was the richest monastery in Lincolnshire. Following a fire in the 18th century many of the buildings along Bridge Street and the Market place were destroyed and replaced with the present 18th/19th century buildings. Medieval deposits comprised ditches, pits and dumped materials. Activity continued into the post-medieval period, but no indication of structural remains existed, probably as a result of cellaring. Large amounts of locally produced medieval pottery were found, with some from Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire. Other finds included a fragment of medieval painted window glass, clay pipes, stonework, worked bone, wig curlers and some metalwork. Well-preserved plant and animal remains were also present.
