Abstract: |
The route of the proposed Sevenmilestone to North Country water main was examined by a desk-based study and brief reconnaissance. The proposed pipeline passed through an area which had historically been predominantly downland; Princes Common (Sevenmilestone to Coosewartha), Goonearl and Sinns Common/North Downs. Thitry-five sites of potential archaeological significance were identified; most were of post-medieval date and related to mining and settlement of the area during the later 18th and 19th centuries. Surrounding the former downland was a group of settlements with place-names recorded in the medieval period; Gover, Coosewartha, Stencoose, Sinns, North County/Tresadderns and Treleigh. Some prehistoric material was recorded in the area, principally around Coosewartha where there were two rounds, a probable field system attached to the rounds, and a scatter of flint objects. [Au] |
