Abstract: |
Refurbishment of the Swaledale electrical transmission line, along a distance of 6.5km, consisted of the replacement of a series of electrical poles. These included poles on two Scheduled Monuments, known as Grinton Dykes, and other earthworks including a second pair of dykes, known as the Fremington Dykes. These may date from the Norse period. The archaeological observation of groundworks, revealed information about the structure of the dykes, demonstrating that the western dyke of Grinton Dykes had a revetment wall for at least 100m of its length. A possible settlement site was also recorded immediately to the east of the western dyke, and a group of possible Iron Age structures recorded towards the eastern end of the route. [Au(adp)] |
