Abstract:
An evaluation involving desk-top study, topographic survey, field survey and trial trenching was carried out at two former industrial sites. At Bank Yard Road, a former coal mine dating from the 1820s was investigated. The mine had continued in use until 1863, but the building was shown on successive maps until 1925. No documentary evidence of its function was found, but oral evidence from local inhabitants confirmed that it had been used as a brickworks. Trenching at this site revealed a number of large industrial features, including a sandstone-constructed flue with an associated cobble surface and a sloping ceramic tiled surface which contained runnels for drainage. Other features included brick floor surfaces with associated internal and external walls. The nature of any industrial processes which had taken place at the site remained elusive, and material which would have confirmed use of the site as a brickworks was not found. At the Foundry Road site, a brewery existed from at least 1815 until the 1920s or later. Three evaluation trenches were excavated in this area, one of which revealed a large cellar. The southernmost wall of the cellar formed part of a culvert for a piped stream, noted in the topographic survey. A cobbled yard surface was also investigated, and it was evident that no previous activity had taken place on the site prior to the construction of the brewery. It was recommended that an excavation should be carried out prior to the consolidation of a revetment wall at the site of the coal mine, and that a wall which had not been surveyed during the evaluation should be recorded.
