Abstract: |
Between April and July 2001 repair works were carried out at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. In order to gain site access, a red brick trackway was lain down across the drained mill pond. English Heritage expressed concern about the amount of rubble left after the contractors had withdrawn. Before the refilling of the pond it was requested that trial trenches be excavated to ascertain the volume of rubble remaining. The excavations revealed that a substantial amount of the material was remaining. Based on these results English Heritage decided that, before the refilling of the pond, all of the contamination should be removed as it was potentially detrimental to the operation of the water wheels, water valves and other associated machinery. ARCUS was commissioned to undertake the archaeological supervision of this work. [Au(abr)] |
