Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a sandpit, undertaken as part of an Environmental Statement, identified that no archaeological sites or artefacts had been recorded within the eleven hectare proposal area. However, mammoth remains and two Palaeolithic handaxes had been found during the digging out of the existing pit, and the workings appeared to have destroyed a Bronze Age settlement in 1938. Few other finds had been recorded in the immediate vicinity of the proposal area. A Bronze Age axe may have been found just to the south, and a Roman kiln site lay 500m to the west. It was also possible that the county boundary, which lay just to the west of the site and was a continuation of an early Anglo-Saxon boundary, may have been marked by a ploughed-down bank. In a wider context, significant numbers of Palaeolithic artefacts had been found in the Pleistocene gravel deposits on the south bank of the River Wey, which may also have been the location for a number of settlements of later prehistoric periods. Later still, the area had been one of the foci of a major Roman pottery industry. In the medieval period, the area of the site had probably been either in the open fields of Wrecclesham, or covered by woodland. Cartographic evidence dating from the 18th century onwards showed the site occupied by woodland, pasture and hop fields until the present day. It was concluded that the proposed development would not entail a direct or indirect physical impact on archaeological remains, and that it would make no visual impact on Listed Buildings or Conservation Areas. A programme of further evaluation of the less disturbed western fields within the proposal site was anticipated. [Au(abr)]
