Abstract: |
The review of documentary, geological, archival and cartographic sources indicated that the potential for archaeological activity in the area was low for the earlier periods and moderate to high for the medieval periods onwards. Only minor previous archaeological research had been conducted in the vicinity, due in part to the relatively undeveloped nature of the locality. The site did not lie within an Area of Archaeological Constraint, as identified by the Local Council. Surviving remains were likely to be derived from activities that were shaped under a rural agricultural economy. The site was known to have been exploited as both pasture and arable land since medieval times. There were likely to be the remains of field boundaries and drainage ditches and there may even have been evidence of structural remains. The site was also a typical location for iron related works, being within a forested area of the Weald that lay upon clay and in close proximity to numerous water sources. Industrial activity could be inferred for the medieval era and documented during post-medieval times (e.g. through the presence of known lime-kiln sites.) On this basis, and in accordance with the Policy of Surrey County Council as outlined in their Unitary Development Plan, AOC recommended that a detailed archaeological field survey be carried out.
