Abstract: |
In April 1993, in advance of the replacement of the nave roof, a collection of 103, mainly late 18th century, graffiti, cut into the lead of the nave and chancel, were recorded. The largest category of graffiti was in the form of outlines of feet (or rather shoes), but there were also outlines of hands, symbols (a heart, a cross and a phallus), initials and random lines. Similar graffiti are known on church roofs across the Midlands, but their explanation and authorship are uncertain. The initials do not tally with the Middleton churchwardens and the dates cover too many years to be roof plumbers (although modern plumbers do cut such graffiti); groups such as bell ringers or choir members might be likely possibilities.[AIP] |
