Abstract:
An archaeological watching and recording brief was carried out during groundworks for a new footpath. The groundworks were located in the inner Great Court of the former St. Augustine's Abbey, reused as the King's new Lodgings or Palace following the dissolution in 1538. The stone steps proposed for reinstatement dated to the later foundation of St. Augustine's College. The watching brief monitored the hand excavated trench and identified the surviving footings of the original steps, formed of Caen stone and rag stone capped with brick. A series of deposits were exposed immediately below the topsoil, including a small area of crushed chalk, perhaps flooring, abutting mortar and flint footings, attributed to the still existing steps accessing the walkway from the west. The extent of ground works did not allow for a sufficient assessment of the character, data, extent, quality and condition of the observed archaeology to be made. Accordingly, the ground works have had no measurable impact on the buried archaeological resource. [Au(adp)]
